The name reflects the connection of Dulwich with Charles Dickens and his book 'Pickwick Papers', written in 1836.
In the book, Dickens had Mr Pickwick retire to Dulwich and the description of the cottage to which he retires matches a listed cottage, built in 1820 and situated in Dulwich Village, to such a degree that the cottage is now called 'Pickwick Cottage'.
It is thought that Dickens himself retired to Dulwich – he was certainly reported as being seen there – and a road in the centre of the village is called 'Pickwick Road'.
