Lucky Ladybirds?
Nevruz night heralds the start of spring and is celebrated on or around 21st March by Turks across Central Asia. The word Nevruz comes from the Persian language. ‘Nev’, meaning new and ‘ruz’, meaning day. There are many customs and traditions associated with this special time of awakening and one of them centres around ladybirds.
On the night before the feast of Nevruz the head of the household collects a stone to represent each family member. The stones are then placed around the edge of the chimney of the house. The following morning the stones are checked and if a ladybird is found under any of the stones it means good fortune will be bestowed on that family member, but it is believed that the whole family will share their good fortune.
