Built in 1920, this house was originally owned by Lord and Lady UpJohn as a country home easily accessible to London. It was split in to two houses in 1965 and still retains lots of the original features such as the beautiful wood, original floor tiling, high ceilings and large proportion windows which give superb views out in to the gardens and the Foreland Valley. The house is on St Margarets Road, just over half way down the hill. This means that its a mere moment or twos walk away from the bay. The sea front in St Margarets Bay is a predominantly pebble beach with one or two areas of sand. Its a superb location to watch the shipping in the English Channel and to view France on clear days.
The Foreland Valley Conservation area is in front of the house while it is bounded on the other side by National Trust land. The village is situated midway between the towns of Dover and Deal. Canterbury city centre with its excellent shopping facilities, further schooling, entertainments and other amenities is within easy reach to the west and the historic town and cinque port of Sandwich is easily accessible to the north.
Village shops, the local school and other amenities are all within walking distance of the property and there is a main line railway station in the neighbouring village of Martin Mill which provides regular services to London and the Kent Coast.
Channel Ferries services are available from Dover, Folkestone and the Folkestone terminal of the Channel Tunnel and Ashford International Station is within 45 minutes travelling distance and provides regular Eurostar services to Paris, Lille and Brussels with connecting services beyond.
The house has a large lounge with double doors out to a sun terrace, a dining room with large windows looking out over the gardens, a kitchen, cloakroom, 3 good bedrooms, large gardens and a driveway with parking for at least 4 cars. In our opinion this is a terrific house in an excellent location and would suit both families and those looking for a weekend retreat from the City.
The house is in Council Tax band F.
Entrance Porch: 1.42m (4ft 8in) x 2.12m (6ft 11in)
Wooden double doors open in to the entrance porch on the side of the house. As you enter through the doors and see the hard wood front door, red tiled floor and windows to either side of the porch it sets the scene for the house. Even the porch tells you that you will see a large period house in excellent condition we feel.
Hall: 3.11m (10ft 2in) at central point x 5.75m (18ft 10in)
The door, with its leaded lights opens to reveal the larger hall which serves as the central point of the house. The same red tiled floor is carried through and there are doors off to the lounge, dining room, kitchen, cloakroom, third bedroom and airing cupboard. The ceilings are 10'' high and this just adds to the feeling of space and the age of the property.
Lounge: 5.68m (18ft 8in) x 6.12m (20ft 1in)
This is a very large lounge with large hardwood double doors out to the terrace overlooking the garden. It has an open fireplace with exposed brick surround and polished floorboards. The floor boards are very dark in colour as a combination of the original colour applied to the wood plus age but appear to be in exceptional condition, as they are in the rest of the house. The double doors to the garden are in a bay area which opens on to the sun terrace running across the rear of the house.
Theres a gas point in case you want to have a modern fire and 2 double radiators on the walls.

Dining Room: 3.27m (10ft 9in) x 4.87m (16ft 0in)
The dining room has windows on two sides and double doors out on to the sun terrace. The windows are very tall and wide, with dark, hardwood, frames very much in keeping with the style of the property. They give views out in to the garden, on to the sun terrace and out in to the Foreland Valley. At the other end of the room are top level windows designed to let light in to the central areas of the house, just as there are in the wall between the kitchen and hallway.
This dining room can easily accommodate 8+ people at a large table and so would be excellent for dining with guests. It has room for suitable side furniture along the walls and there are 2 double radiators in the room.

Sun Terrace:
The sun terrace runs across the back of the house from the double doors out of the dining room to the end of the lounge. It has an original tiled floor and wooden support columns. Steps lead down to the lawn.
Kitchen: 3.24m (10ft 8in) x 3.73m (12ft 3in)
The red tile floor extends from the hallway in to the kitchen. It has a range of dark oak cupboard with worktops over them. There are windows with a stainless steel sink inset in to the worktop and a door to the front of the house. A built-in pantry cupboard is in one corner of the room and theres a door through to the inner hallway leading to the stairs. The kitchen has ample space for a table and chairs and a double radiator is mounted on the wall.

Cloakroom: 1.24m (4ft 1in) x 2.54m (8ft 4in)
The cloakroom is accessed off the hallway with the same red tile flooring. It has a window to the side of the property. Space and plumbing is provided for a washing machine.
Boiler Cupboard:
Accessed from the hallway, this is a large cupboard with the boiler and slatted shelving in it.
Bedroom 3: 4.3m (14ft 1in) x 3.13m (10ft 3in)
The third bedroom has the same large windows as are downstairs and looks out to the side of the house. Its a large double room with en-suite facilities including a shower enclosure and a wash basin. A double radiator is mounted on the wall.
Bedroom 3 Photo 2:
Inner Hall: 2.45m (8ft 0in) x 1.38m (4ft 6in) opening in to stairs
The inner hall can be accessed from the lounge or the kitchen. It has a door to a storage area plus the stairs leading to the first floor. It has the same dark, stripped and polished floorboards running through from the lounge. The stairs are also of this same dark wood. They turn through 90 degrees twice to rise to the first floor and there is a very large window on the turn to let in natural light.
Pantry/ Store: 2.05m (6ft 9in) x 2.45m (8ft 0in)
Two steps lead down in to a storage/ pantry area. Its L-shaped and goes under the stairs which turn and rise to the first floor. A window lets in natural light but this makes an excellent storage area as the stone floor and brick walls lend a cooler temperature to the room.
Landing: 4m (13ft 1in) x 1.8m (5ft 11in)
The large window on the turn of the stairs also lights the landing. It has doors off to: -
- Bedroom 1: (13'' 6" by 13'' 0")
- Bedroom 2: (11'' 5" by 11'' 9")
- Bathroom
- WC
Bedroom 1: 4.12m (13ft 6in) x 3.96m (13ft 0in)
The Master bedroom looks out to the side of the house. Its a very good size double bedroom with the same exposed floorboards as are downstairs. A door leads through loft eaves storage space. Its fully boarded and has a hot water cylinder.
The bedroom has folding slatted doors through to the second bedroom and a door from the landing.
Bedroom 2: 3.49m (11ft 5in) x 3.59m (11ft 9in)
Bedroom 2 is also a double room. It has a window which looks out in to the Foreland Valley and, obviously, over the gardens for the property. Again, the room has exposed floorboards and theres a built-in cupboard in one corner of the room. It shares folding doors through to the main bedroom so it can either be used as a bedroom or as a dressing room.
Bathroom: 1.83m (6ft 0in) x 2.65m (8ft 8in)
The bathroom has tiled walls and a window to the front of the house. The suite comprises a bath, a vanity sink unit and a separate large shower enclosure. A towel radiator is on the wall and there are exposed floorboards.
WC: 1.22m (4ft 0in) x 1.72m (5ft 8in)
The WC is separate to the main bathroom. It also has a window to the front of the house, exposed floorboards and a radiator on the wall. The WC is mounted on the front wall.
Gardens:
The garden is large and is mostly laid to lawn but with shaded areas provided by trees both to the front of the house and around the garden, and a large ornamental pond. The trees at the front of the house shield it from the road and give it the appearance of nestling in amongst all the greenery. There are steps down through the trees to the driveway.
The main garden is behind the house and is on two main terrace levels. The first has stone steps leading down from the sun terrace at the rear of the house. It is entirely lawn and continues down to the main area of the garden. A greenhouse is situated in one corner of the garden for those keen to give their tomatoes a head start!
This really is, in our opinion, a very lovely garden. It has space and character with different areas and features, and is situated in a beautiful location.

Parking:
Parking for at least 3 to 4 cars is provided in two areas. The first is at the top of the drive, just off the St Margarets road. This space would be ideal, with relevant planning permissions, for a garage to be built. The rest of the parking is on the drive which slopes down to the house.
Floorplan (Ground):
