 Monday, November 17, 2003
Berkshire offers the resident a multitude of benefits, including history, scenery and convenient access to London and the West. Johnny Turner looks at some of the best new homes in this sought-after county.

Those in the market for a home that gives access to both country charm and cosmopolitan bustle will be hard pressed to find a better location than Berkshire. This Home County offers easy commuter access, wonderful countryside and great local amenities – it’s no wonder builders are having trouble keeping up with the high demand for homes in the area.

Starting in Maidenhead, Linden Homes offers Mode, an exclusive new development in the heart of the town. The 11 contemporary two- and three-bedroom homes are high-specification and low-maintenance – ideal for those with busy working lives. The commute into London Paddington takes just 30 minutes and the area is well served by a number of motorway connections. A cool, minimalist decorative style is evident throughout the homes. Fully fitted kitchens are from the Symphony range and feature stainless steel appliances from Siemens. Prices at Mode start at £245,000. This development of two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom homes will be a select community of just 30 homes in delightful semi-rural surroundings. Weavers Place is ideally situated, nestled between Newbury, Reading, Swindon and Oxford. Excellent communication links include proximity to Junction 13 of the M4, and nearby Newbury station offers regular services to London with a journey time of under an hour. Charles Church has recently begun construction on a collection of outstanding new homes in the village of Barkham. Davenport Hide is a development of only three large individually designed executive homes, built to complement the surrounding area. These new homes will feature decorative porches and plinth courses, as well as attractive tile hanging to the eaves. Rooms to the front have bay windows, enhanced by eye-catching detail to the glazing. All three house designs benefit from spacious accommodation, with generous kitchen/breakfast rooms and guest bedroom suites in addition to the master suites. Kitchens will be fitted with sleek granite work surfaces and a comprehensive range of integrated appliances. Charles Church also provides a Select service, offering purchasers a range of options from additional kitchen units to decking schemes for the gardens, allowing buyers to transform a house into their dream home.

Reading is an ever-popular spot for Berkshire buyers, who find its vast array of amenities and commuter connections hard to beat. And those who take a look at CDC2020’s new development The Picture House will find even more to like. The Picture House is a landmark seven-storey apartment scheme built, as the name suggests, on the old Odeon cinema site in Cheapside. According to Julie Butt, sales executive for CDC2020, ‘Reading is a lively, cosmopolitan town and The Picture House, right in the centre, is attracting a range of interested purchasers despite a great deal of competition elsewhere in the area. It really stands out from the crowd.’
Over 75 per cent of the apartments have now been reserved, so prospective buyers will have to be quick to secure the apartment of their choice. There are ten two-bedroom apartments remaining, all of which offer designer kitchens with a range of integrated stainless steel appliances, as well as stylish contemporary bathrooms and en suites.
Prices at The Picture House currently range from £179,950 to £203,000. Call the marketing suite, open daily from 10am to 5pm, on 0118 951 3171 or contact selling agent Romans on 0118 953 8700.

Also approaching sell-out is a particularly luxurious collection in Sunningdale by CALA Homes. Bearsden Grange now has only one property left to sell, one of the two penthouses at the site. The other penthouse and the eight apartments were almost immediately snapped up by eager buyers, who range from investors and downsizers to those looking for a second home.

The remaining penthouse is now available to view as a show home, providing a real feel of the luxury and comfort available here. The property features a generously-sized en suite bathroom to the main bedroom and has a balcony with views over beautiful gardens. Bearsden Grange is conveniently placed within walking distance of transport links; the journey to London Waterloo takes just under an hour from Sunningdale train station. Sunningdale is also within close proximity of the M3, M4 and M25.
The remaining penthouse is on sale at £515,000. The show apartment is open Thursdays to Mondays from 11am to 5pm. For further information contact Chancellors on 01344 620163 or the CALA sales office on 01344 873941.
