Croydon has long been recognised as a convenient place to live, due to
its choice of transport connections. Now, with a massive regeneration
project underway, the area is even more sought-after by buyers. Johnny
Turner zooms in on some winners
With great train, tram and bus links, Croydon is in the premier league
of well-connected Greater London locations. With the expected expansion
of the East London Line in the next four years or so, this town will
get even more convenient. A lot of money is being poured into the area,
and buyers are responding to this show of faith with demonstrations of
their own belief in the location. And the new homes market is a good
reflection of this confidence.
Barratt Kent has got full planning consent to create
New South Quarter,
a new urban village of 796 apartments near the centre of Croydon.
Construction work has already begun to transform the 13.2 acre site,
formerly occupied by a disused gas works, into a striking landmark
development that pushes forward the town’s regeneration plans.
The first homes at the development – one-, two- and three-bedroom
apartments – will be released for sale on Saturday 9 February, priced
from £184,995 and sold on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Barratt
invites potential purchasers to register their interest, as well as to
view apartment plans and a model of the development, in advance of the
launch.
New South Quarter, on Purley Way, will also have 246 affordable homes,
a medical centre, nursery school, café and convenience store – and the
striking landscaping will culminate in a ‘circus’ in the heart of the
scheme. A small number of studios will be available at a later date.
There will also be a range of commercial spaces, including workshops
and dedicated business start-up units, to meet the growing demand for
business space in the town.
New South Quarter will feature striking landscaping. Buildings will be
set around courtyards, landscaped gardens and open green spaces. The
focal point will be a ‘circus’ in the heart of the development,
inspired by classical Italian architecture. The River Wandle, which
currently crosses the site underground through a closed concrete
culvert, is being restored to create an open river, and the apartment
buildings will be set on either side.
The site is very well connected. Pedestrian and cycle routes will link
the development with Croydon town centre, Wandle Park Tramline and
nearby Waddon Park. There are train links to Victoria and London
Bridge, which can take as little as 13 minutes, and a service to
Gatwick runs round the clock.
