South London is now overtaking north London in terms of style and popularity. Anna Bowden looks at some new homes that are really doing this up-and-coming area justice.

South London is one of the most up-and-coming destinations of the moment and one of the city’s most talked about areas. It has almost overtaken north London in terms of popularity and has money pouring into it left, right and centre from many different sources for regeneration and cosmetic improvement. No wonder, then, that prices are rising in this newly-desirable part of the world.
As always, new homes developers have been quick to see the potential and demand for quality homes in this area, and there is now a plethora of great new developments springing up in all corners, offering high-specification living for all types of purchaser.

Bellway’s new Meridian South development in Hither Green, Lewisham, is set to bring a massive regeneration and economic boost to the area. Meridian South is the redevelopment of the former Hither Green hospital, and will retain the clocktower made by Queen Victoria’s clockmaker as its central feature, along with a new central piazza and water tower. The Historic Quarter of the development was officially opened just two weeks ago by the Mayor of Lewisham, Steve Bullock and will, when complete, comprise a mixed-use scheme of 442 new homes plus offices, a doctor’s surgery, health and leisure facilities, a children’s nursery and landscaped parking. The nursery is being funded by the Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative and by the New Opportunities Fund, which provides lottery funding to community projects, and will provide full day care for up to 40 children between the ages of three months and five years.

Apartments are spacious and designed in a variety of styles. Prices for phase two of the Draco House building start from £147,000 for a one-bedroom ground-floor apartment and range to £227,000 for two-bedroom fourth-floor apartment. For further details or to arrange a viewing call the sales office on 020 8695 9856.

Neil Armstrong, marketing director for Copthorn Homes, says, ‘We are very pleased to be able to announce our continued presence in Peckham. We’ve built over 150 new homes already in the area and we are looking forward to providing the next phase.’
Consisting of 189 one- and two-bedroom apartments and a choice of three-bedroom town houses, the latest project is designed to appeal in particular to shrewd investors who are keen to reap the benefits of a conveniently located home which offers excellent rental prospects.
Neil Armstrong continues, ‘The Camberwell College of Art is situated nearby in Peckham, providing the ideal market for people who want to attract potential tenants from the student market. Kings College Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital are also nearby, bringing opportunities to let to medical professionals too.’
Peckham offers excellent transport links, with New Cross and Elephant & Castle providing an efficient tube service. Prices at SouthQuarter2 range from £140,000 to £300,000. Taylor Woodrow has just opened a superb new show apartment at Bombay Wharf, a Thames-side scheme of 70 apartments and one house in historic Rotherhithe, to showcase the 103 Rotherhithe Street section of the development. International design team Connections in Design has created the show apartment to perfectly reflect the unique design and high quality of the development, using original wooden beams as a significant feature to provide character and sophistication. Di Franklin, sales manager at Connections in Design, says, ‘We aimed to create an oasis of understated sophistication in the area of Rotherhithe; a bohemian flavour, used with natural, earthy colours combined with rich textures to contribute to the intrinsic quality of the scheme. We have avoided using window treatments because we felt there should be no distractions from the amazing views. You need to visit the show apartment to fully appreciate the uniqueness of this development.’

Bombay Wharf is accessed from St Marychurch Street and is grouped into five main buildings, which are surrounded by contemporary landscaping and timber decking. Each of the buildings has a distinctly different feel, derived from their unique architectural features, and apartments are given character by timber flooring, exposed brickwork and timber ceiling buttresses. The specification differs for each building to preserve the individual characteristics of each part of the scheme. However, all apartments boast sleek stainless steel integrated appliances and bespoke units in the kitchens, giving a stylish and contemporary feeling. Many apartments also have balconies or terraces, allowing for full appreciation of the spectacular riverside views of Tower Bridge, or the impressive Canary Wharf skyline.
Bombay Wharf occupies a prime Thames-side location and is perfect for commuters, being close to the Jubilee Line at Bermondsey, taking travellers to Canary Wharf within ten minutes. Prices range from £240,000 for a one-bedroom home to £595,000 for a large three-bedroom duplex apartment. One four-bedroom house at £1.1 million (freehold) is also available. For further information call 020 7064 4897.

Middlesex is the Home County that wears the trousers, says Anna Bowden.

Middlesex has a great many draws – a reputation for good schools plus all the attractions of London while boasting property at a fraction of the price – but it is probably the balance between city and country living that makes it most attractive to house buyers. Offering a diverse mix of rural delights and cosmopolitan chic, plus some excellent and convenient transport options, Middlesex is proving to be a tempting proposition for today’s purchasers.

The first phase of homes at Chantry Park, Barratt’s new development on the old Hillingdon Hospital site is now almost half sold, months ahead of the building programme, and a second phase has already been released, supported by the opening of two fully-furnished show homes. The development, which will eventually comprise 120 high-specification apartments and houses, is being built on 6.5 acres of land acquired after becoming surplus to NHS requirements.

Especially popular at Chantry Park is Barratt’s Home Exchange service, which enables buyers to trade in existing properties at full value and side-step the usual problems involved in selling a home. First-time buyers too have are being offered a good deal, with contributions towards stamp duty and a deposit.
All homes at Chantry Park include fully fitted bathrooms and kitchens with integrated appliances, as well as central heating and double glazing. Private parking is provided throughout. Prices start from £179,995 for a one-bedroom apartment, £209,995 for a two-bedroom two-bathroom apartment, and £315,000 for a three-bedroom house. For further details call the sales office, open Thursdays to Sundays from 10am to 6pm and on Mondays from 2pm to 6pm, on 01895 272096.

Visitors are excited by what we have to offer and the development is becoming very popular.’
Served by impressive electronic gates, an entryphone system and a lift to all floors, these contemporary apartments are presented with designer kitchens, fully fitted with granite worktops and integrated stainless steel appliances. Master bedrooms have en suite power showers and all apartments have modern programmable central heating and double glazing. Outside, there is private parking and landscaped communal gardens. Suede is close to local shops as well as to Uxbridge town centre. And with the M25 and Heathrow Airport in close proximity, the development will prove popular with those who are looking for a second home or a British base if they live or work abroad.

Barratt Southern Counties managing director Trevor Sawyer says, ‘Windmill Gate offers tremendous value for the London area and is already proving immensely popular with first-time buyers. These are incredibly attractive homes in a very convenient and desirable location.

‘What’s more, our development recycles ex-industrial land which was considered something of an eyesore locally. In fact, it is a classic example of the sort of site the Government has said it wants to see recycled. In this way its regeneration is generally having a positive effect on local values.’
Windmill Gate stands in its own landscaped grounds and is accessed through impressive electronically-controlled entrance gates. Boasting a stylish central garden square, a children’s play area and new public open space, Windmill Gate is transforming run-down industrial land into a smart new community. Anna Bowden visits excellent new development Clapton Square, by Furlong  Homes

Imaginative house builder Furlong Homes has seen immediate success with its Clapton Square development in Hackney, a modern terrace of classic Georgian style town houses overlooking a Victorian square in the heart of a vibrant, upcoming and highly sought-after location. Comprising a range of 29 unusually spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments set within a series of four-storey buildings, the development occupies over half the length of the east side of Clapton Square.

The apartments at Clapton Square provide the perfect compromise between the old and the new, offering purchasers the benefits of living in a beautiful period style home but with none of the usual drawbacks (high heating costs, specialist builders, poor insulation and so on) and all the high-specification, low maintenance and contemporary facilities demanded by today’s hectic lifestyle set within living accommodation that is traditional in arrangement. Lounges and kitchens are open plan but bedrooms, bathrooms and storage areas are distinctly separate and lead off a hallway, a design touch that adds a feeling of privacy and space. Rooms boast wooden sash windows and moulded wood doors. And in terms of the exterior, the buildings perfectly reflect the surrounding architecture with an elegant brick façade, arched windows to the ground floor, wood dormer windows, entrance doors surmounted by fanlight windows, railed balconies to the first and top floors and a mansard roof. Surrounded by arrowhead railing and feature brick piers, the terrace is built from traditional Georgian materials including brick, slate, timber and render, resulting in a beautiful historical appearance but with all the benefits of modern building techniques.

In terms of the specification, homes at Clapton Square are unparalleled. Kitchens boast Spanish Porcelanosa tiled flooring, sleek contemporary units and a comprehensive range of Smeg integrated appliances including hob, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and washer/dryer. All master bedrooms have en suite facilities, whilst those on the top floor open onto their own private rooftop terraces. On the first floor, reception rooms have French doors which lead out onto a private balcony overlooking the central Square. All bathrooms have Porcelanosa ceramic floor and wall tiles, which are complemented by Roca white suites and Hansgrohe fittings. Beechwood effect flooring can be found throughout the apartments, with other features including spotlighting and pendant lights, fitted wardrobes to master bedrooms and video entry phone security systems.

The quality and specification of the homes are, on their own, enough of a draw; however, it is the sense of space at Clapton Square that overwhelms the viewer and which, added to the area’s increasing trendy and cosmopolitan feel, makes it an excellent buy. Prices at Clapton Square start from £199,950 for a 555 sq ft one-bedroom apartment, and £239,950 for a 722 sq ft two-bedroom apartment. For further sales information contact either selling agent Copping Joyce on 020 7288 0330 or Furlong Homes on 01992 782201.

As more buyers find out about cosmopolitan, connected west London, demand for homes here continues to soar. Crest Nicholson have responded with a luxurious set of villas and apartments that mix cool with convenience

It is appropriate that the name of Crest Nicholson’s latest west London development is derived from the Latin word for ‘life’ – and not only because this was once the site of Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital. Vitae, an impressive set of homes at Ravenscourt Park, is the sort of place that allows you to make the most of life – beautiful parkland and good transport and amenities on the outside, combined with luxury, space and style on the inside.

The location is superb. Nestled between thriving Goldhawk Road and the green expanses of Ravenscourt Park, Vitae lets your life be as bustling or as quiet as you want it to be. Nearby King Street is awash with top-quality restaurants, shops of all descriptions, good pubs and upmarket bars. Transport is particularly good here, with District Line Underground stations at Stamford Brook and Ravenscourt Park just moments away, as well as nearby Hammersmith station for the Piccadilly and Hammersmith & City Lines. The West End is also convenient by car – and the A4 is just around the corner for a direct route to western destinations.

Entertainment possibilities in the area are infinite. You have a choice of high-profile rock gigs at the Hammersmith Apollo or the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, plus more restrained jazz, classical and acoustic performances at Bush Hall. There is outstanding live theatre at the Lyric on King Street and the Bush Theatre at Shepherd’s Bush Green. Riverside Studios near the Thames hosts art-house cinema as well as cutting-edge stage productions. Big-screen delights await you at the UGC Cinema and Warner Village Cinema. Other leisure options include comedy, sporting events and clubs.

For relaxation, walks along the nearby Thames are wonderful in any season. And for cyclists, the immediate area will be well represented in forthcoming London Cycle Network, making cycling a safer and more viable alternative to driving. The natural beauty of Ravenscourt Park is the jewel of the local area – and in built-up west London the close proximity to such well-kept green space is a major selling point for Vitae.

Vitae has been sought-after by buyers from the off-plan stage and it is easy to see why. Both the four-bedroom three-storey villas and the two-bedroom apartments show an extremely high level of design and meticulous attention to detail. The apartments feature a living/dining room with balcony, plus master bedrooms with en suites and wardrobes. The four-bedroom villas offer master bedrooms with en suite bathroom and terrace balcony and a garage.

Prices for two-bedroom apartments start at £380,000 and four-bedroom villas are priced from £975,000. Contact Crest Nicholson on 020 8741 3334 for more information.

Elements of the traditional village are being used to create some very desirable newly built communities, finds Johnny Turner.

The idea of what constitutes a village can vary from person to person, but the overriding image one has when picturing a village is the interaction of the people within it. The traditional village is a community of neighbours who all know each other - famously, this can be both a blessing and a curse. Today’s village, however, has moved on from the limited idea of a village as a small hamlet with a shop, church, post office and pub. What today’s home buyers want is the feeling of community and self-sufficiency that a village is known to provide. Modern additions mean even greater choice within the neighbourhood itself, and the quality of the homes being built these days in a village-type setting are the icing on the cake of what can be called ‘neo-traditional’ living.

One hallmark of this new type of village is that it is open to a wide range of influences in terms of design. A good example of this trend is The Hamptons, where North American influence pervades the design of the homes but where the provision of amenities is a modern take on the principles of community and shared experiences that are central to village life. Officially launched just a couple of weeks ago, The Hamptons is a development in Worcester Park, Surrey, where 480 brand new homes are being built, along with generous parkland and an impressive array of amenities.
Over half of the 60-acre site will be given over to landscaped parkland, called Mayflower Park. The Hamptons will also feature Maple Lodge, a central community building which will house a fully equipped gym, business suite and function room. Mayflower Park will feature a large sculptured hill incorporating a natural amphitheatre, 15,000 new trees and a sculpture park with pieces lent by the Royal Society of British Sculptors. A nature reserve, two tennis courts, cycle paths, children’s facilities, four acres of lakes and a fitness trail round out the very impressive amenities available to the resident. Homes at The Hamptons draw from the style of New England, with the timber-clad look in a combination of whitewash and a palette of complementary colours.

Prices in the first phase range from £380,000 to £750,000 for the three-storey four-, five- and six-bedroom houses with private gardens and garages. There are also apartments – and although all the one-bedroom apartments have been sold, there are two-bedroom apartments, located in landscaped grounds with parking, at prices from £305,000. Call 020 8337 3425 or visit thehamptonssurrey.co.uk to find out more.

For discerning home buyers looking to live in a country village with all local amenities and commuter links close to hand, Appledore Developments presents the Village Collection. This array of vibrant, villagey locations provides purchasers with a choice of high-quality homes with a quintessentially English character in a number of locations in Kent and Sussex. Yvette Brotherton, sales and marketing director at Appledore, says, ‘We have a wide selection of developments based on the “English Country Village” theme. Appledore takes pride in building a small number of select developments at any one time, and we believe that this helps us to achieve high standards of finish.’

A fantastic example of the Village Collection is Wheelwrights in Plaxtol, Kent, which represents the quality that is achievable when a developer with vision sets out to make a beautiful community out of brownfield land. The homes at Wheelwrights enjoy the setting of a small rural village between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. The perfect rural retreat, these homes have the advantage of stunning views of the surrounding hills as well as a location that is perfect for commuting to nearby towns or the capital.

Buyers are finding that they can have it all – style inside and space outside. Johnny Turner finds some very desirable new homes with an emphasis on the outdoors.

Every buyer wants to feel at home inside a new property. But another important consideration is the feeling you get when you step outside your home. Space is scarce in London and the South East but there are many homes now on offer that have outside space that adds greatly to the resident’s enjoyment. Whether you’re looking for acres of space in which to wander, a smart courtyard area or a traditional garden, today’s developers are working hard to provide an outdoor dimension to the homes they build.

Berkeley Homes has released the first eight new homes at a striking development in Sundridge, Kent. The properties are all spacious five-bedroom detached homes and boast a fabulous setting – Birchfield commands an elevated position above the village of Sundridge and is set within ten acres of mature ground that include formal gardens.
‘This is a residential haven, a perfect escape for those searching for space and tranquility,’ says Sam Pullen, marketing manager for Berkeley Homes (Southern). ‘Even parking is discreetly located underground for those homes without integral garages.’
Birchfield will comprise a mix of 23 new and refurbished homes, including the conversion of the Grade II listed Birchfield House, formerly Sundridge Park Hospital. A three-storey show home is now open. Prices for the first eight new build properties range from £730,000 to around £865,000. For further information contact the marketing suite on 01959 569205 or visit berkeleyhomes.co.uk.

For those who desire a high-quality home in a courtyard setting, it would be hard to imagine a more successful combination of privacy and style than Stables Yard, a new venture by Balmanton Land Ltd. Stables Yard is an exclusive development of just four very individual two-bedroom houses set in a private cobbled courtyard. Ideally located off Southfields Road, within walking distance of East Putney, Southfields and Wandsworth, this attractive gated development retains the feel of the original stables and yard while offering all the benefits of modern living.
The homes are built by Balmanton Land in conjuction with architect Richard Holden of Holden & Partners. Each house has a different architectural style maximising space and light. There is excellent security – the development is gated and has a video entry system. Each home also features private parking.

The granite cobbled courtyard and landscaped private gardens, created by award-winning landscape gardeners Sweet Leaf Garden Design, have been planted with growth in mind. Each garden offers a high degree of privacy, with high walls to all sides, and mature trees surround the development.
Prices range from £449,950 to £589,950. Contact Mattherw Graham at Balmanton Lane on 020 8877 1716 or selling agents Quinton Scott on (020 8971 6780) or Foxtons (020 8355 1000).

Langdon Park, Wilson Connolly’s collection of 31 new homes in Teddington, is set in 32 acres of parkland. With a landscaped village green and a wealth of mature trees, the development inspires a true feeling of country living. The location, near the River Thames, Kingston town centre, Bushy Park and Hampton Court, is unrivalled for transport, natural beauty, sporting possibilities and cultural pursuits.
The homes at Langdon Park consist of three types of town houses as well as the exclusive Oakgrove apartments. The town houses are set over either three or four floors, with rooms designed for relaxation and separate areas for entertaining. The main reception areas, on the second floor, provide open plan living/dining space which leads through glazed doors to a kitchen/breakfast area. Attention to detail is superb, with a high standard of fixtures and fittings, classic white bathroom suites, attractive timber staircases and polished chrome door furniture.
Prices for the remaining three-bedroom apartments start at £387,000 and the town houses are priced from £575,000. Get further information from the sales centre by calling 020 8977 8552 or visiting wilsonconnolly.co.uk.

In Wandsworth, Antler Homes has created Pavilion Square, an elegant development of 16 three-bedroom houses and 14 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The Georgian-inspired homes are situated behind electronically operated gates and offer either integral garages or off-street parking.
One of the big attractions of Pavilion Square is that it offers fantastic outdoor space – the homes have been designed around a traditional 18th century-style courtyard and within creatively landscaped grounds. Another is ease of access for commuters, with Tooting Bec tube station only 650 metres away for a quick journey into the City or West End.
Apartments are priced from £225,000, while town houses start at £595,000. Call Antler Homes’ sales and information centre and show home, open Thursday to Monday 11am to 5pm, on 020 8767 2503 or selling agent FPDSavills on 020 7409 8756. Visit pavilionsquare.co.uk.

A recent survey by the Halifax has identified a garden as a prime requirement for prospective home buyers. Meanwhile, we are working longer hours than ever and the average buyer finds that there is little time to devote to garden maintenance. In response to these trends Countryside Properties has incorporated low-maintenance roof terraces into each of the five three-bedroom Georgian-style town houses at its Queen Charlotte’s Place development at Kings Hill in West Malling, Kent. Buyers of these beautifully designed homes will have the best of both worlds – great outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining as well as ease of upkeep.

The town houses take their architectural cue from the Georgian style, with elegant cornices of white stone and trimmings of white-painted woodwork porticoes, railings and sash windows; some of the properties also incorporate Juliet balconies. Living space is spread over four storeys, with a basement level that provides additional storage space. There is also a utility room.
Set in a 650-acre landscaped environment, Kings Hill has hundreds of acres of undulating terrain which extends across large areas of protected heath, parkland and mature woods. There is also a 6,600-yard golf course, the ultimate perk for outdoor enjoyment.
The town houses at Queen Charlotte’s Place are available for sale at prices from £299,950. The marketing suite is open weekdays from 10am to 8pm and weekends from 10am to 5pm. Call 01732 875182.

Barratt is seeing success with another Middlesex development, this time in Stonegrove, Edgware. Regency Court, a collection of one- and two-bedroom apartments, is already two-thirds sold. Barratt North London sales director Michael O’Leary says, ’In a residential setting, close to all the amenities, with a choice of stations and a journey time into London of under 40 minutes, you couldn’t find a better location.
Prices at Regency Court start from £217,000 for one-bedroom apartments and £297,000 for two bedrooms. For further details call 020 8958 6136.

Bob Weston, managing director of Weston Homes, comments, ‘The outstanding success that we have had at Southern Place demonstrates the high quality of the properties that Weston Homes is building, and its ability to redevelop brownfield sites in prime locations.’

These include first-time buyers and young professionals who wish to commute to the city centre, and investors who are looking for low-maintenance new homes in up-and-coming areas.’
Suede is close to local shops as well as to Uxbridge town centre. And with the M25 and Heathrow Airport in close proximity, the development will prove popular with those who are looking for a second home or a British base if they live or work abroad.

Crest Nicholson South’s new Pereshaw development at Isleworth perfectly captures the balance between old and new with its stunning collection of exclusive apartments and houses in the favoured residential area of Wople Road. ‘This distinctive location allows buyers to access a highly convenient network of road, rail and public transport links, as well as being close to the heart of “old Isleworth” and Syon Park,’ explains Claire Grove, sales manager for Crest Nicholson South.
Pereshaw has been designed to represent a contemporary slant on a traditional theme, featuring a choice of three- and four-bedroom town houses with character eves and other distinctive architectural details in addition to some highly contemporary features, such as gated security and private parking.
‘This development really has it all,’ concludes Claire Grove. ‘It is distinctive, attractive and highly exclusive, and with a real air of prestigious, refined living. It connects easily with the modern world and equally well with the rich history of the area.’

Isleworth boasts quick and easy transport links into west London and Heathrow Airport, making Pereshaw the perfect base from which to pursue business interests and travel quickly to the heart of central London. However, those looking for the quieter life will also benefit from the development’s location, near the local beauty and interest spots of Syon Park and Syon Park House.
Prices at Pereshaw currently start at £360,000 for a Blakeney three-bedroom house. For further information regarding prices and availability as well as Crest Nicholson South’s part exchange scheme, call the sales office on 020 8847 5058. Alternatively, visit the website at crestnicholson.com.
Barratt’s stunning development of 252 new homes on an eight-acre site in Sunbury-on-Thames is almost sold out, months ahead of completion – fewer than 30 apartments now remain for sale at Windmill Gate.

With today’s affluent lifestyle many of us can afford to spend more time away from home, on holiday, weekends away and evenings out. In addition, we own increasingly expensive possessions. All this adds up to one thing – the fact that security in the home is essential. Anna Bowden reports.

These days, we feel more able to have the kind of lifestyle we want. By and large, we are more affluent – and more inclined to take extended breaks from work – than we were even a decade ago. Time away from home – once a rare luxury – is now, for many of us, thought of as something of an entitlement. Perhaps we regularly jet off to spend time in a sunnier climate, as millions of us do each year. Or maybe we have taken the plunge and bought a second property abroad – over one million Britons, after all, own second homes in other countries. Either way, a big consideration in choosing a main residence is how secure it will be while we’re away.

On top of this, we have more disposable income nowadays to spend on toys and gadgets, expensive furniture and clothes, and nice things for our home, all of which we need to protect.
Today’s developers are aware of this shift and are taking steps to provide the type of home that is not only beautifully appointed but also safe to leave empty for short or long periods of time. Delph Property Group is currently offering a stunning combination of safety and beauty with its Bonhomie Court development in Hurst, Berkshire, a collection of homes set amongst secluded woodland. The development is a gated community and all apartments feature security alarms and video entry systems.
Other noteworthy features at Bonhomie Court include stylish top-of-the-range fittings, spacious open-plan kitchen/dining rooms and 3.5 acres of beautiful, fully maintained grounds for residents to enjoy. Prices at the development range from £325,000 to £425,000. For details call 020 7907 5555 or visit website delphpropertygroup.com.

Mobile support is also available out of hours via a link line.

Tudor Rose Court is perfectly placed to take advantage of the great health care facilities on offer locally: there is a doctor’s surgery, a number of dentists and several chemists within easy reach of the development, and in terms of shopping there is a nearby Marks and Spencer, Safeway and Tesco.

Quality is key with Appledore Developments, a Kent company with a mission to build the best. Johnny Turner finds out where Appledore has been and where it’s going.

Much has been made recently of the shortage of housing in the South East, as John Prescott’s office scrambles to concoct a workable solution to the problem – and to sell it to us in time for the next election. In this climate, which would seem to value quantity over quality, it is encouraging to see developers who take great care over the design, quality of build and specification of the homes they construct. One such builder is certainly Appledore Developments.

Founded in 1997, Appledore’s emphasis has been on quality homes in quality locations since day one. Yvette Brotherton, sales and marketing director, says of the early days, ‘At that point we had to find sites, which we did. We got planning permission for the first three sites at the end of 1999 and started actually building in 2000.’

The Appledore ethos is the same today as it was then, says Brotherton. ‘When we formed we decided that we wanted to be proud of everything we built. So we will never become a company that builds as many boxes as we can. We choose sites in pretty locations where we can enhance the area – and hopefully we can drive by in 20 years’ time and look at them and be proud of them.’
The developer’s dedication to quality influences the selection of sites; the decision on where to build is informed by not only the beauty of each location but also its accessibility from Appledore HQ in Sevenoaks, she says. ‘All of the sites are within an hours’ drive of the office so we can visit the sites and keep up with them.’ The prospective buyers Appledore appeals to vary from site to site. Bourne Place, for instance, attracted ‘an awful lot of empty nesters as well as families.’

Current Appledore schemes include Elmfield Place in Tenterden, Kent, which replaces a tired Edwardian house with ten luxurious apartments, including four stunning duplex garden apartments, four traditional apartments and two penthouses. Located a stone’s throw from the high street yet in a set-back position, the Elmfield Place will be equally ideal for professionals who commute and purchasers who are looking to downsize to a spacious property from which they can still visit family
Prices at Elmfield Place range from £305,175 to £670,250 for a penthouse.

Also available is Oast Place, in semi-rural surroundings close to Wadhurst High Street and excellent transport links. The development comprises an original oast which has been converted into an impressive village house, and four new mews cottages built in a sympathetic style. The cottages at Oast Place are priced from £375,000 to £395,000. The oast has not yet been released for sale.
‘And we’ve just started a development in Rye, East Sussex, which is a mixture of town houses and apartments. What we build varies according to the area.’

As for the future, Brotherton says the original ethos will guide any expansion. ‘Geographically, we probably won’t expand in the near future. Expand as a company? Yes we would like to. We haven’t got any specific aims – it has to fit in with the ethos. We won’t expand for the sake of it. We’ll expand because we find the sites we want.

South London has much to recommend it – wonderful parks, lovely architecture and a laid-back feel. And the current crop of new homes is very impressive indeed, finds Johnny Turner.

Forget London’s north-south divide; both halves have plenty to offer. I find that south London, however, has a wide-open feel that the north can’t match. The streets seem more roomy, the hills more dramatic for being unexpected. Having lived both sides of the Thames, I can appreciate the broad but subtle differences. And home buyers who take a look around the area right now will find some excellent and varied delights.

One particular jewel is Greenwich, with its markets, green space and maritime flavour. This has been the destination of discerning home-hunters for centuries – and there continue to be new reasons to buy there. Berkeley Homes has unveiled its latest show home in Anchor Iron Wharf. Launched only last autumn, this has become a magnet for potential purchasers.

The six-storey development is situated in the heart of Greenwich and fronts on to the River Thames, giving spectacular views over major landmarks such as the Dome and Canary Wharf. The two-bedroom duplex show home has 924 sq ft of floor space and uses ‘Smartspace’, an intellectually applied method of creating and maximising internal space, natural light and views. The open-plan fully fitted kitchen has ceramic flooring, stylish units and a comprehensive range of integrated appliances. Bathrooms boast Villeroy & Boch suites. In the show home the bedrooms are situated on the bottom floor; stairs rise to the living and entertaining area, which benefits from a Thames-side location, and a balcony (included in all split-level apartments) provides a romantic river vista.

The external space makes excellent use of its riverside location. The Thames footpath adjoins Anchor Iron Wharf and this pedestrian link provides a five-minute walk past a rose garden and up to fashionable Greenwich town centre, with its abundance of cafés and bars.
Prices for two-bedroom duplex apartments start from £350,000. And for a limited time Berkeley is also offering to pay stamp duty on selected apartments. Find out more by calling 01732 227666.
Peckham is an area of south London that is changing rapidly and for the better. And with St James’ new Borland development, SE15 will be improved even more.
Borland bears all the hallmarks of the distinctive St James approach: great architecture, very high specification and lifestyle-enhancing features such as the Total Solutions concierge service.
The twin buildings contain apartments whose size is extremely impressive – and purchasers will get 1,000 sq ft of living space and three bedrooms for the same price you would expect to pay for a much smaller two- or even one-bedroom apartment in any of the usual postcodes. To arrange a viewing call 020 7732 8082.

Nicholas King Homes has just launched its new Isis development in Barmouth Road, Wandsworth. Consisting of only five luxury four-bedroom town houses, Isis is sure to sell quickly, such is the popularity of both this type of home and the area.

The traditionally designed façades mix well with the neighbouring Victorian homes, while internally these town houses offer a more modern mixture of space, light and flexibility. Add to this the up-to-the-minute specification and superb finish for which Nicholas King Homes is renowned and you get an amazing home indeed. In addition, purchasers who buy off-plan will have the opportunity to choose their own specification, allowing them to truly personalise their home.
Wandsworth is a buzzing bohemian area that offers excellent leisure, retail and natural amenities. Transport is also very convenient; Tooting Bec and Wandsworth Common stations provide quick access to both work and entertainment in central London.
Prices are expected to range from approximately £750,000. To register your interest call Nicholas King Homes on 01494 811800 or visit nkhomes.com.

Meanwhile, in Putney St George has announced the launch of Castle Court, the final phase of the award-winning Putney Wharf development. This stylish range of one-, two- and three-bedroom loft-style apartments and penthouses is arranged around a gated landscaped courtyard.
The design and the location are sure to appeal to a cross-section of young professionals and investors. Putney Wharf is nestled between the beauty of the river and the convenience of Putney High Street. The development overlooks a tranquil private courtyard with a thoughtfully designed landscaped garden, which includes a central water feature. And Castle Court residents will enjoy all the benefits that Putney Wharf has to offer, such as a continental riverside piazza accommodating a wide variety of riverfront bars and restaurants. The impressive list of eateries includes the renowned Rocket Riverside, as well as Carluccio’s and Tootsies.
Putney is perfectly placed for commuting to work or going out in the West End, with tube and mainline stations just a few minutes away. Prices for the apartments in Castle Court start from £249,950. For further information call the marketing suite on 020 8788 0212 or visit putneywharf-london.com.

Over half of the 57 new and refurbished properties at Copthorn Homes’ The Academy in Vauxhall have been sold. London’s garden squares have been much-prized addresses for centuries, and the arrival of a new one is cause for celebration. Antler Homes’ Pavilion Square, just one street away from Wandsworth Common, has been designed to incorporate a number of authentic features of the traditional garden square. A central communal courtyard and elegant Georgian-style architecture will be the focal point of this stylish development, which will comprise 14 one- and two-bedroom contemporary apartments and 16 three- and four-bedroom period-style town houses.

Stephen Allan, managing director of Antler Homes Southern, says: ‘In a highly unusual move, the elegant square we have developed has been allowed to retain its marketing name as its permanent postal address, making it London’s newest garden square. As such, not only will residents benefit from the exclusivity of living in this desirable city environment but will also profit from the prestige of a London square address.’
The high-spec apartments and town houses feature contemporary interiors with open-plan sitting room and kitchen, some of which have French doors leading on to a landscaped garden. Master bedrooms include fitted wardrobes and en suite bathrooms. The three-storey town houses offer fully fitted Manhattan kitchens with a stainless steel double oven and an American-style fridge/freezer.
