A family needs a home with good space and flexibility. Johnny Turner sees what imaginative developers are offering today’s family unit.

The key to maintaining equilibrium in a family is striking a good balance between togetherness and ‘me time’. And the current crop of newly built family homes proves to be a great help, providing the amount and quality of space that makes it possible both to participate in family rituals and retreat from them. The areas in which these homes are located are also solid family locations, which is very important in terms of amenities, landscape and opportunities for socialising.
Fairclough’s Viceroy Court in Northwood, Middlesex, features large four-bedroom town houses in the Arts & Crafts style. The homes are built around a beautifully landscaped court with a mature oak tree as its centrepiece.

A typical town house is arranged over four floors and has an integral garage. Other features include a sun room off the kitchen/dining room, a second-floor terrace large enough for entertaining and a Juliet balcony with glazed doors to the guest suite on the top floor.
Internal specification includes designer kitchens with granite worktops and an impressive array of AEG appliances. The three bathrooms/en suites are luxurious, and four rooms are pre-wired for an audio system.
Prices start at £660,000. Contact sales executives on 0845 676 0164 or Another Fairclough scheme that is sure to appeal to families is Oakhill View, located off Tattenhoe Street in west Milton Keynes. This development offers a wide range of new homes in attractive terraced, semi-detached and detached designs – and the piece de resistance is the six-bedroom detached Wren design, priced from £465,000.

The Wren is an impressive double-fronted design with a double garage and driveway. On the ground floor is a living room, separate study and family/dining room opening on to a beautifully fitted kitchen and a utility room. The master bedroom has its own dressing room and en suite bathroom. There are three further bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor and two good-sized bedrooms with a shower room at second floor level within the roof space.
To make this home type even more attractive, Fairclough is offering a part-exchange scheme. For qualifying purchasers, the developer buys their present home at full market value, which eliminates much of the stress from the buying process.
The marketing suite and show homes at Oakhill View are open daily from 10am to 5pm. Call 0845 676 0166 for further information.

Wimbledon is an extremely popular buying destination for families. Combining the best in leafy suburban living with great transport connections, SW19 has long been one of London’s most sought-after spots. Antler Homes is currently building Home Park, which will comprise six three- and four-bedroom houses, each with an individual and secure parking space.

And these homes are well placed for one of the most important considerations for family buyers. Karen Lee-Brindle, sales director of Antler Homes Southern, says, ‘In addition to its superb location, the area also offers a number of excellent and highly reputable primary and secondary schools.’
The modern homes are laid out over three storeys. On the ground floor, alongside the family reception room and fully fitted open plan kitchen/dining room, is a study which could also be used as a fourth bedroom. The kitchen/dining room has French doors to the garden.
On the first floor is the master bedroom with fitted wardrobes and en suite bathroom, along with a spacious sitting room. The two further bedrooms are on the top floors, along with a linen room and a family bathroom.
Wimbledon is full of top-quality amenities, including many high street shops and boutiques, wine bars, cafés and restaurants. The nearest tube is Wimbledon Park, and the nearby A3 gives access into central London and Guildford.

Central London has always been a popular place to live, and it is easy to see why. Johnny Turner examines the choice of high-quality homes to be found in the heart of the capital.

Central London is a whole world in a few square miles. World class entertainment, big business, fantastic shops, fascinating history and the winding River Thames are just a few of the things that make so many choose to make the centre of the capital their home. And the current selection of newly built homes gives today’s busy Londoner instant access to a high-energy, low-maintenance lifestyle.
Charles Church has the ideal answer for those who are looking for a stylish new apartment in the heart of London, but don’t want to live in a broom cupboard or pay exorbitant service charges as many of the capital’s residents famously do. The Pimlico Apartments, located on Vauxhall Bridge Road, near the Thames in popular SW1, is a contemporary development of 77 apartments offering extraordinary value for money.

This scheme offers unashamedly modern design, outside and within. Specifically designed for permanent residents rather than the investor market, these generously proportioned one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments offer a high standard of finish and outstanding levels of internal specification. As typified by the show apartment, properties at the Pimlico Apartments incorporate the current ‘must-haves’ in interior design, including pale ash veneer internal doors with satin chrome fittings, kitchen with sleek black granite worktops and a full range of stainless steel and integrated appliances. Many apartments have private terraces and balconies for al fresco entertaining.
There is linked CCTV surveillance, video entryphones, on-site concierge and, for each apartment, a secure allocated parking space included in the purchase price. Prices range from £410,000 to £820,000. Call 020 7630 5785.

Moving eastward, the very chic EC1 area is home to Persimmon Homes’ Clerkenwell Central, a development of 32 modern warehouse-style properties. The range of accommodation includes one- and two-bedroom apartments and penthouses, maisonettes and three-storey mews houses with roof terraces.
The location is fantastic; this hip urban village is home to many media and high-tech workplaces, offers some of London’s best bars and restaurants and is also steeped in history. Just on the border of the City of London, Clerkenwell is a great starting place for London walks, which can take in anything from a stroll to the West End or the Thames to an educational meander through the lanes of the City. And the Barbican Centre is very nearby, offering a broad range of cultural pursuits every night of the week.
The development is gated and private, providing a quiet escape right in the middle of town. Parking is available by separate negotiation. Prices currently range from £300,000 to £597,500. For further information on Clerkenwell Central contact agent Hurford Salvi Carr on 0845 676 0183 or request a brochure online at persimmonhomes.com.

Furlong Homes has just released the two penthouses at its landmark Fusion development near Canary Wharf, the newest member of the ‘central London club’. This centre of commerce is expected to see 100,000 employees by the end of the decade, and this is the latest – and one of the most impressive – of many developments that have provided homes for London’s new professionals.
All the other apartments in this stunning contemporary building have now been snapped up, and only these two penthouses remain. Each of the homes is set over two levels with private terraces leading from the living/dining area on the lower level and the master bedroom on the upper level.
Fusion offers the best London has to offer – not only wonderful amenities in the immediate area but extremely easy connections to the rest of the capital via the nearby Docklands Light Railway.
Prices start at £499,995. To make an appointment to view contact Furlong Homes on 01992 782222.
One central London area that is set to see a complete transformation is Elephant and Castle, previously known for its garish shopping centre and roundabout but soon to be seen as a smart Zone 1 location that is great for transport – and home.

Oakmayne Properties is spearheading the regeneration plans for the Elephant and Castle with South Central, a flagship urban scheme that will boast stylish architecture by Piers Gough. Behind the remarkable tiered façade will be stylish apartments and penthouses with full-length terraces and floor-to-ceiling glazed doors. South Central West, given planning permission in February, is Oakmayne’s second phase and will complement the existing residential buildings on Crampton Street.
There are approximately 40 apartments remaining in South Central East, priced from £269,000 to £475,000; secure underground parking spaces are priced at £15,000. The premier collection, encompassing apartments from the fifth floor upwards, will be launched this month at prices from £265,000. Completion is expected in November. Call 020 7403 6644.
Back to SW1, where LCR Developments and FairBriar are working together to transform the historic Grade II listed Westminster Police Station and Magistrates Court, built in 1901, into a scheme of 49 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments including duplexes and penthouses, overlooking the capital’s largest green square.

68 Vincent Square will have apartments designed around two private gardens, complete with balconies, terraces, concierge facilities, a rotunda, lift access and secure underground parking. All have a spacious sitting room, some dual-aspect. Around 80 per cent of the homes will overlook the ten-acre Vincent Square, and a selection of the sitting rooms have dramatic circular drawing rooms, following the contours of the existing period police station building.
Fully fitted designer kitchens are either traditional or open-plan, incorporating a breakfast/dining area in the larger apartments. Around 70 per cent of the homes will benefit from additional outside living space in the form of private balconies or terraces. All master bedroom suites and some principal guest suites will have luxurious en suite facilities.

Scheduled for completion next year, these apartments are priced from £340,000, £460,000 and £650,000 for one-, two- and three-bedrooms respectively. Penthouses are priced from £1.1 million to £1.4 million. Contact DTZ Residential on 020 7630 9333.

‘I need some space’ is a commonly heard cry of prospective home movers. Johnny Turner sees new homes with relaxing outdoor areas.

With spring well and truly here, those who had put up with their dissatisfaction with their home’s outdoor amenities will now find cause to resume their search for a garden or other outside space. This is buying season, and as prospective buyers look at their potential next homes, ease of access to the outdoors, whether a private garden or a public footpath, is highly desirable. The current lot of new homes have a lot to recommend them in the outdoor stakes.
These lengthening evenings are ideal for dining or entertaining in a pretty external space. And Charles Church’s Launceston Gate in Epping offer five-bedroom homes in which French doors from the dining room open on to wonderful outside space that includes a garden and patio area.

Bedfordshire offers a winning combination of countryside and commuter ease. Johnny Turner looks at what’s on the market in this popular location.

Far enough out of London to be free of the capital when it’s of no use, and near enough to dip in when the mood strikes, Bedfordshire is a county of rolling countryside punctuated by bustling commuter towns. There are many types and sizes of home available in this friendly, thriving county – and the current selection of newly built homes is indeed impressive.
In the attractive market town of Biggleswade, Twigden Homes is selling Roman Place, which is located just off Drove Road. Each one of the selection of three-bedroom homes, priced from £209,995, and four-bedroom homes, which start at £241,995, benefits from en suite facilities as well as either garages or allocated parking.
Those who reserve early will also have a choice from Twigden’s wide range of sanitaryware, wall tiles, kitchens and work surfaces at no additional cost. Meanwhile the developer’s Choices package offers an extremely comprehensive range of additional items that the buyer can also purchase – all of which will be in the home when it’s time to move in.
The location is excellent. The town centre in a ten-minute walk away, while Biggleswade station, with its direct train service to King’s Cross, is also within walking distance. The town centre, which was enhanced in 1998, is a pleasant place to live and work, with its busy Saturday market and plentiful shopping and leisure facilities.
Construction on the homes at Roman Place is underway and the first of the homes will be ready to move into in June. Potential purchasers are welcome to view the detailed plans and specification details at Twigden’s sales office, located within Wilson Peacock on the corner of Market Square in Biggleswade. For further information contact 01767 313080 or visit twigdenhomes.co.uk.

In Leighton Buzzard, Bovis is selling Billington Park, where just four luxury homes remain for sale. As a buyer incentive, Bovis is offering the Home Exchange scheme, which has been specially designed to help ease the pressures of selling an existing house when buying new at Billington Park. The scheme allows purchasers to opportunity to reserve their chosen plot immediately. Bovis will hold the property at an agreed price, with the purchaser’s existing home given in part-exchange. This means there are no costly estate agent fees to pay, nor any need to spend valuable time marketing a property and finding a buyer.
