The village of Trigrad is situated in the Western Rhodope Mountains not far from the border between Bulgaria and Greece. It lies 25km south of the town of Devin, and 40km west of the winter resort of Pamporovo. The numerous remains found in cave dwellings from the Copper-stone Age, as well as from the Thracian period show the old origin of the village.
The village is believed to be composed of 3 smaller settlements and that’s why is called Trigrad (three settlements). The Muslim and Christian culture and traditions have become interwoven in the village. Here in Trigrad you can see a Christian church and a Muslim mosque built side by side. | Condition | One of the most impressive natural landmarks here is the Trigrad Gorge. This is a canyon of vertical marble rocks in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgarias very southern parts. The gorge encloses the course of the Trigrad River that plunges into the Devils Throat cave and 530m further comes out as a large karst spring. It laters flows in to the Byunovska River. The gorges west wall reaches 300m in height, while the east one extends up to 300-350m. The Trigrad Gorge is located 1.2km from the village of Trigrad at 1,450 above sea level and has a total length of 7km, of which the real part is 2-3km. The wild karst terrain surrounding the sprawling village of Trigrad, abounds in caves - 102 found so far. One of them, Haramiiska cave is of great interest. Trigrad is a starting point for horseback riding, biking, and hiking to the village of Mugla and the Yagodinska cave famous for its unique cave pearls and other formations.
The village is well organized and provides main services such as medical centre, church, school, shops, cafes and regular transport.
